Summary
At a glance
PlayList’s current digital-sale fee is five percentage points below Bandcamp’s standard rate. Both platforms charge payment processing separately.
Bandcamp’s reduced rate
Bandcamp documents a 10% rate after $5,000 USD in sales, while the prior-12-month threshold remains met.
Fees are only one input
Audience demand, discovery, conversion, and the tools an artist needs can matter more than a five-point difference.

Platform fee is not payment processing
A platform fee pays the platform operating the marketplace or sales product. A payment-processing fee covers the transaction infrastructure that moves the buyer’s payment. They are separate deductions.
On PlayList, Stripe processing still applies after the 10% music-sale platform fee or the 0% tip platform fee. The exact Stripe amount can vary with the connected account, payment method, country, currency, disputes, refunds, and other adjustments.
Bandcamp likewise separates revenue share from payment processing and describes processing as typically 4% to 6%. A typical range is not a guaranteed rate for any individual sale.
How an artist should use this comparison
Apply the percentage to your realistic selling price, then model processing separately. Next, compare the tools you actually need and the audience you can realistically reach on each platform. Lower fees do not create demand on their own.

Methodology and limitations
- We reviewed the public PlayList fee guide and Bandcamp’s official fee page on July 22, 2026. This article should be rechecked when either source changes.
- Calculations multiply gross sale value by the documented platform percentage and round to cents. They exclude processing, taxes, refunds, disputes, currency conversion, collection-society charges, and other adjustments.
- Bandcamp’s reduced rate depends on its documented sales threshold. The reduced-rate examples are scenarios, not a claim that every artist qualifies.
- This analysis compares fees only. It does not estimate traffic, sales volume, conversion, audience ownership, catalog fit, or the value of either platform’s broader features.
- PlayList publishes this analysis and is therefore not an independent reviewer. All competitor claims are linked to Bandcamp’s primary documentation so readers can verify them.
